Josiah Stowell's Daughters (1826) Joseph Smith's trial in South Bainbridge on a charge of being a disorderly person in 1826 is well known. Equally known is his acquittal as a result of the testimony of Josiah Stowell for whom he was working at the time. Less known is the appearance in court of certain other witnesses for Joseph - two of Stowell's daughters with whom Joseph had "been keeping company." They apparently gave satisfactory answers when asked about Joseph's behavior toward them, both in public and private. What lends an air of intrigue to this affair is that less than a year later the young prophet was married to Emma Hale, a marriage that had been encouraged and aided by Mr. Stowell himself.
