First Prophecy (1823)

After the First Vision, Joseph's mother still felt compelled to unite her family with a local church. Joseph who had been expressly commanded by the Lord "to go not after them," refused to attend and told his mother, "You will not stay with them long, for you are mistaken in them." As illustration, he said he would give an example, "and you may set it down as a prophecy." Deacon Jessup, a supposedly good and pious local religious leader, he told his mother, would soon take financial advantage of a widow with eight small children. In less than a year this prophecy by the young prophet was literally fulfilled. Lucy did not yet understand that her son, who was to restore the original Church of Jesus Christ, was a prophet in the footsteps of all the Biblical prophets.
