500 Little Known Facts in LDS (Mormon) History

Assassination Attempt (1819)

Attempts to take Joseph Smith's life were common, but the most unusual one occurred when he was only fourteen, several months before the First Vision. Lucy Mack Smith mentions the incident briefly in her biography of Joseph but quickly drops the subject without further reference. An assassin fired at young Joseph as he was about to enter his home in Palmyra one evening at twilight. The lead balls missed the target but struck a cow nearby. Neither the suspect nor the reason for the attack was ever discovered and no references in his pre-vision life suggested the kind of enmity that would prompt such a deed.
